Paper Sizes

A Series

The A series is based on an aspect ratio of $1:\sqrt{2}$. Each subsequent size (e.g., A1, A2) is obtained by halving the longer side of the previous size, resulting in half the area while maintaining the same aspect ratio. A0 has an area of 1 square meter.

B Series

The B series maintains the $1:\sqrt{2}$ aspect ratio, similar to the A series. However, its sizes are derived differently: the area of a B series sheet is the geometric mean of two successive A series sheets. For example, B1 is larger than A1 but smaller than A0, effectively fitting between A0 and A1 in scale. This series is often used for posters and books.

C Series (Envelopes)

The C series is primarily used for envelopes and is defined by ISO 269. A C-series envelope is designed to perfectly fit an A-series paper of the same number (e.g., A4 fits in C4). It also maintains the $1:\sqrt{2}$ aspect ratio.

Common US/Imperial Sizes

These are common paper sizes used predominantly in the United States and other regions that do not fully adopt the ISO standard. Their aspect ratios typically differ from the ISO series.

Other International & Regional Sizes

This section includes various other paper sizes used globally, for specific purposes like envelopes, photography, newspapers, books, business cards, and traditional regional standards. Use the dropdown to filter specific sub-categories.

Size Ratio Calculator

Select two paper sizes to see how many of the smaller size fit into the larger one. (Works best within the same series: A to A, B to B, C to C, where the ratio is an exact power of 2).
